How come suddenly we've got to "winning" a free kick or a penalty? Surely the name is guide enough: the thing is a penalty for foul play. I can't help wishing the commentators would record it in that way, rather than lauding the players who "win" these things, often by deception - viz Joe Cole in yesterday's England game against Poland. Or the Austrian who got Beckham sent off on Saturday.
Personally I'd like to see managers trying to stamp out foul play, rather than players being complimented by all and sundry for "winning" the referee's whistle. It might help if the media could get it right too.
In fact I'll go further, I'd like to see retrospective yellow cards awarded for deception. And post-match analysis and confirmation/rescinding of all cards.
What's more, it's time to introduce instant replay technology for decision making: penalties, goals and yellow and red card offences. Works for cricket, rugby and other sports; tennis relies on electronica. Time for footy to join the 21st century.
