"There were rumblings of discontent when the controller of Radio 2, Lesley Douglas, brought him back to the BBC last year. But they are as nothing compared with the venom that has greeted her announcement that Chris Evans will take over from Johnnie Walker as the presenter of Radio 2's drive-time show from 18 April."So says The Indy in this article.
Now I'm well aware that it could just be the grumblings of a load of grey beardies (and Surly will be sure tell us if it is so). A strong 'don't change it' mentality exists in the BBC radio audience: you just wait for the shrieks and howls when they finally get a round to sacking Wogan (personally, I can't wait). But with Evans I feel the pre-emptive protests may be justifed. He's had more comebacks than Lazarus, and blown them all. And OFI was just terrible. Some of the worst telly ever made, and I can't understand why so many supposedly sophisticated people (aka BBC Execs) were fooled for long enough for it to make it to air.
I think Evans is past it. He was a fashion - and I was among his greatest fans when he started on (the old, orginal and great) GLR - and very much of his time. And now, like old fashion magazines, is confined to the Dentists' waiting rooms. He's on the 'has been' pile. I listened to the first six or so of his new Saturday show, and for a while they were fine, but then I missed one and realised I didn't miss it. Shouty, 'posse' radio, and faux naive interviews? That's all available on Radio 1 and I can't see it working on 2 five days a week.
He's going to have to grow, both up and in breadth, when he takes over the drive show on Radio 2, or he'll have blown the biggest of all comebacks. And that will finally be that. He's taking a massive risk, and I can't help admire that. But I'd rather admire him for being a good radio host, and the chances of that seem slim.

Almost spooky, Beep, again.
*crosses 'Chris Evans on Radio 2' off his list of subjects to potentially blog about, with a big black marker pen*
Agree, again.
oops. Sorry. But don't cross it off: blog away. I mean you've only posted twice today. What's wrong with you man? Drying up or something?!
ooooh, pistols at dawn?
;-)
actually, what I find interesting is that anyone has a list of subjects to potentially blog about!
wv: just-shoot-me
Bang
Bang bang, you shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, the beep just shot me down
I was five and you were six
We rode on horses made of sticks
I wore black, you wore white
You would always win the fight
Bang bang, you shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, the beep just shot me down
Seasons came and changed the time
I grew up, fell out of rhyme
You would always laugh and say
Remember when we used to play
Bang bang, you shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, the beep just shot me down
Music played and people sang
For my funeral the church bells rang
After echoes from a gun
The I vowed that I'd be gone
Now I am, you don’t know why
Sometimes you'll cry
(I didn’t say goodbye)
Bang bang, you shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, the beep just shot me down
(with many apologies to Cher)
wv: who's-called-who's-bluff?
Off topic but Beep, how did you get that nice last.fm thing in your sidebar? I'd like one of those.
lovdopie: No, not right at the moment, thanks for asking.
bah, beardies. evans is alright by me, as long as he's not on the telly.
