Dashing away with the smoothing iron

I remember my mother teaching me this song when I was a very very young lad. It isn't complicated. I don't know why, but it suddenly came into my head last night. My mother remains well.

'Twas on a Monday morning
When I beheld my darling
She looked so neat and charming
In every high degree
She looked so neat and nimble, O
A-washing of her linen, O

Dashing away with the smoothing iron
Dashing away with the smoothing iron
She stole my heart away.

'Twas on a Tuesday morning
When I beheld my darling
She looked so neat and charming
In every high degree
She looked so neat and nimble, O
A-hanging out her linen, O

Dashing away with the smoothing iron
Dashing away with the smoothing iron
She stole my heart away.

'Twas on a Wednesday morning
When I beheld my darling ...etc

Dashing away with the smoothing iron
Dashing away with the smoothing iron
She stole my heart away.

By now I am expecting that you have the drift ... only a few more verses to go.

'Twas on a Thursday morning
When I beheld my darling ...etc

'Twas on a Friday morning
When I beheld my darling ...etc

'Twas on a Saturday morning
When I beheld my darling ...etc

'Twas on a Sunday morning
When I beheld my darling ... etc

You can hear its tune, here

I've always wondered, where and why was she dashing. It's not what one commonly does with a smoothing iron.

Is it?

smoothing irons are used in bookbinding, to keep things flat

You've got to wonder about any bloke who gets turned on by some female doing the bloody ironing even if she is doing it at breakneck speed.

Or who takes six days to finish her laundry.
