Boxing rules

No matter how exciting the next part of your life is to be, and no matter how much you are looking forward to it, there is something quite painful about packing.

It's not just that everywhere I look there are boxes. There is a kind of ache for the safety of the life we have now, and the fact is that I am folding it away and sealing it into recycled cardboard, and sealing it with brown tape.

For me, there is the added layer in that I only unpacked this lot last August. But every book you place in there, every CD, every item of linen, or kitchen utensil has a place in ones personal history. And the rememberances are making me quite extraordinarily sad.

But I suppose those are the rules of packing your life up. It's a natural time for a little stock-taking. Unlike the boxes, my shelves are empty.
